European Gas Prices Swing on Trump's Iran Policy Uncertainty

European natural gas prices fluctuated sharply as traders weighed potential diplomacy against renewed U.S. strikes on Iran following the American midterm elections.

European natural gas prices experienced significant volatility this week, driven by uncertainty surrounding the foreign policy of Donald Trump toward Iran. On November 2, prices saw their steepest daily decline since April, with Dutch Title Transfer Facility futures falling more than 10 percent to 93.18 euros per megawatt-hour. This plunge followed reports that Iran's supreme leader authorized government talks with the United States and that the U.S. president was willing to allow more time for diplomacy.

By November 4, prices rose again as market participants shifted focus to the aftermath of the U.S. midterm elections. Traders are now weighing whether the Trump administration will maintain a diplomatic path or launch renewed strikes against Tehran. Such military action threatens to further disrupt liquefied natural gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping disruptions have already curtailed exports from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Europe remains highly vulnerable to these geopolitical shifts as winter approaches. EU gas storage facilities were 74.62 percent full as of November 1, a level below the seasonal average. Germany's storage levels were specifically noted at 61.03 percent, missing its 70-percent target. This fragility is compounded by colder temperatures in Northwest Europe and a planned European Union ban on Russian LNG imports scheduled for January 2027.
