Florida Republican Robbie Smither Defects to Democrats Over Trump

Lifelong Florida Republican Robbie Smither announced Tuesday that he will vote for Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. Smither stated the decision is a protest against President Donald Trump, arguing that the Republican Party has abandoned its core principles for the sycophancy of a transactional leader.

Smither intends to support Democratic candidates David Jolly for governor and Castro for Florida's 14th District. He criticized Republican candidate Mike Beltran for adopting Trump as his primary identity rather than maintaining principled independence. Smither noted that his decision does not stem from a change in personal values but from a belief that his party has shifted away from them.

Former Representative Matt Gaetz attempted to persuade Smither to remain with the Republican Party by claiming that Democrats want to trans his children. Smither rejected the appeal, citing his primary concerns as the financial burdens of raising children, including a son on the spectrum, and managing costs for insurance, mortgages, and therapies. Other supporters of the president responded by claiming Trump's $5,000 dividend check would ease Smither's financial struggles and that Trump's policies have prevented Iran from closing the Hormuz Strait.
