Donald Trump Claims U.S. Stopped Funding Ukraine Defense

Donald Trump announced during a cabinet meeting that the United States is no longer funding Ukraine's defense against Russia. He asserted that NATO members are now funding the war while the U.S. sells them military equipment, stating that the U.S. is now focused on trying to stop the killing in Ukraine rather than providing financial support.

Government reports indicate a more complex financial reality. While Congress has approved no new funds during Trump's second term, over $50 billion in previously appropriated military aid remains unspent and continues to flow to Kyiv. Additionally, 91 percent of humanitarian aid funding, including support for water supplies and medical services, has survived recent administration cuts.

Conversely, the U.S. has nearly exhausted the $33 billion allocated for direct budgetary support. This leaves Ukraine facing a projected $19 billion budget deficit next year. To address the gap, the Trump administration is pushing European nations to fund weapon purchases for Ukraine, with the Netherlands becoming the first country to participate in the scheme.
