Anthropic CEO Urges Government to Limit AI Innovation Pace
Dario Amodei called on the U.S. government to regulate the speed of AI development to ensure risk prevention keeps pace with capabilities.
A debate has emerged in Washington over whether the U.S. government should aggressively regulate the pace of artificial intelligence innovation. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, urged the government to dictate the rate of capabilities advancement to prevent potential catastrophe, arguing that risk prevention must have time to keep up with technological growth.
Legislative efforts to implement such regulations have divided leadership in Congress and the White House. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are pursuing decisive congressional action. This push is supported by AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton, who has warned Congress that regulation is necessary to avoid disaster.
Conversely, President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson have resisted these efforts, favoring free innovation within traditional legal frameworks. Critics of the proposed regulatory schemes argue that government-imposed limits would lead to industry cartelization and protect the market share of established AI companies by stifling competition.
