Antonio Guterres Urges UN Security Council Reform at BRICS Summit

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the reform of the UN Security Council and the Bretton Woods system during an 11-nation BRICS summit in New Delhi. Guterres argued that the irreversible rise of a multipolar world requires updating multilateral institutions to reflect current global realities.

Comparing the need for institutional change to the General Assembly's recent endorsement of the Equal Earth map over the distorted Mercator projection, Guterres proposed four pillars for inclusive global growth: finance, technology, climate justice, and peace. He urged Multilateral Development Banks to expand funding and warned that unchecked artificial intelligence could widen global divides in income and sovereignty.

Guterres demanded that developed nations fulfill their $300 billion annual pledge to assist developing countries with climate change. He also called for the respect of international navigational rights and territorial integrity in response to ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, and the Gulf.
