UN Reports Iran Executed 56 People Since March

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk announced Wednesday that Iran has executed at least 56 people on national security-related charges since March 19. According to Turk, 27 of these individuals were executed following anti-government protests in January, which were driven by food price spikes and hyperinflation.

Turk stated that the Iranian government uses capital punishment to "instil fear among the population and suppress dissent." The UN also highlighted systemic judicial failures, noting the use of torture to secure confessions and a general lack of fair trials. More than 100 people currently remain at risk of execution on security charges, while drug-related executions persist at an alarming rate.

Iranian officials rejected the UN findings, asserting that the use of the death penalty is a lawful measure consistent with the country's national and religious laws. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an immediate halt to all executions and the full abolition of the death penalty.
