Poll Shows Low U.S. Support for Iran War

A Reuters/Ipsos poll of 4,505 U.S. adults reveals that 50% of Americans believe military action in Iran will destabilize the Middle East over the coming year, while only 17% expect an increase in stability. Public approval for the war currently stands at 35%.

Donald Trump and Israel launched the conflict in late February 2025. The war has cost U.S. taxpayers at least $37.5 billion and resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. service members and thousands of Iranians. Recent developments show the president backing away from threatened "massive attacks" on Iran, contrasting with his earlier predictions of a swift victory.

The conflict has triggered regional instability, including Iranian missile and drone attacks on neighboring countries and commercial shipping. Iran has also choked off traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, leading 58% of poll respondents to expect worsening gasoline prices. Additionally, Iran-backed Houthis have threatened Saudi shipping in the Red Sea, while new fighting sparked by the war in Lebanon remains under a U.S.-brokered truce.
