Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Defends Fed Chair Kevin Warsh
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh after markets reacted negatively to a lack of forward guidance on interest rates.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh following market volatility triggered by a recent press conference. Speaking with CNBC on Tuesday, Bessent characterized the negative market reaction as a "detox" for financial journalists and traders who he claims have become overly reliant on central bank hand-holding.
Bessent supported Warsh's decision to withhold forward guidance regarding the trajectory of interest rates. He argued that providing such guidance previously contributed to an inflation spike more than five years ago and restricts the central bank's ability to pivot as economic conditions change.
During the interview, the Treasury Secretary also questioned whether a further interest-rate hike is necessary, signaling a potential divergence in view between the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System.
