Trump Threatens Greenland Annexation and Imposes European Tariffs

President Donald Trump threatened to annex Greenland using military force, initiating a diplomatic and economic crisis with European allies. The U.S. administration launched a pressure campaign to secure control of the island, citing its mineral wealth and strategic location in the Arctic. To ensure compliance, the U.S. imposed tariffs on European nations and exerted pressure that led to the withdrawal of German troops from the territory.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the administration's actions, characterizing the situation as a real Arctic struggle and arguing that the U.S. must project strength while Europeans project weakness. He asserted that American control of Greenland is the best outcome for the region and the United States.

In response, eight European nations—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Britain—issued a joint statement of full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. These countries condemned the U.S. tariffs as actions that undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. The European Union is currently drafting retaliatory tariffs worth 93 billion euros or market restrictions against American companies to provide leverage for upcoming meetings with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
