Trump Criticizes Supreme Court Over Tariff and Citizenship Rulings
Donald Trump claimed Supreme Court rulings on tariffs and birthright citizenship cost the United States trillions of dollars in money and prestige.
Donald Trump claimed via Truth Social on Wednesday that recent Supreme Court of the United States rulings regarding birthright citizenship and tariffs have cost the United States "TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS" in money and prestige.
In February, the Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not grant the president authority to unilaterally impose global tariffs. Following this decision, United States Customs and Border Protection issued more than $100 billion in refunds to firms by late June.
The Court also invalidated a January executive order intended to restrict birthright citizenship to children with at least one parent possessing legal status. The ruling affirmed that the 14th Amendment grants citizenship to all persons born on U.S. soil. While the Justice Department has passed the deadline to petition for a rehearing, Republican lawmakers are now attempting to codify the original executive order through legislation.
