Olive Branch Mayor Opposes Flag Order for Dolly Parton

Mayor Ken Adams of Olive Branch, Mississippi, has sparked public backlash by opposing directives to lower the American flag to half-staff following the death of country music icon Dolly Parton at age 80. The stance contradicts orders from President Donald Trump and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, both of whom directed that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff for one week to honor the singer.

Adams argued via Facebook that such honors should be reserved for military heroes, first responders, and major national leaders. He cited Mississippi's home rule as the legal basis for local government discretion, asserting that he was elected to lead with conviction rather than be a "salute and execute" mayor. While Adams acknowledged Parton as a "great person" for whom he has "nothing but respect," he maintained that preserving the meaning of the gesture requires selectivity.

Local residents and social media users criticized the decision, pointing to Parton's extensive philanthropic work, including the donation of 325 million books to children. In a separate development, New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced reports that her tribute to Parton using highway signs may have violated federal road safety guidelines regarding driver distraction.
