Chicago wheat futures plunged nearly 7% after Vladimir Putin signaled the possibility of constructive peace talks with Ukraine. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Russian president raised the prospect of peace in the Black Sea region, an area recently characterized by tit-for-tat airstrikes against port infrastructure and cargo ships.
These maritime disruptions, alongside crop risks linked to El Niño, had previously created a significant war-risk premium for agricultural commodities. The market reaction follows a period of extreme volatility, during which the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index recorded its largest monthly gain since the Arab Spring.
Because Russia and Ukraine together account for more than 25% of global wheat exports, investors anticipate that a potential peace agreement could restore trade flows. Such a development would ease global food supply risks for the coming year by stabilizing the primary corridors for grain exports.
