Trump Urges Congress to Pass $350 Billion Defense Package

President Donald Trump called on Congress to prioritize a $350 billion defense funding package and the Save America Act upon their return from recess.

Donald Trump urged House and Senate leadership on Tuesday to make the Reconciliation 3.0 budget package and the Save America Act their top priorities. In a series of Truth Social posts issued shortly before his departure for a NATO summit in Turkey, Trump demanded that $350 billion in additional defense funding move quickly through the Budget Committee to maintain U.S. military superiority.

Trump praised the current state of the armed forces, claiming that morale is at a record high and that the military has achieved historic recruiting records months ahead of schedule. He argued that this funding, paired with the Save America Act's voter ID requirements, is essential to ensuring the country remains free for future generations.

The proposal faces significant hurdles on Capitol Hill. Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed doubt about the bill's viability, stating she does not see a path to securing the 50 votes necessary for passage. Internal Republican opposition has also emerged from fiscal conservatives demanding spending cuts to offset the budget resolution. Additionally, there are concerns regarding whether the Save America Act can survive the reconciliation process under the current parliamentarian, whom Senate leader John Thune has reportedly refused to replace despite requests from the president.
