DHS Shifts Immigration Focus Amid Pressure for Mass Deportations
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security faces pressure to expand immigration enforcement to include millions of undocumented migrants beyond those with criminal convictions.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is facing intensified pressure from policy advocates to expand immigration enforcement. While previous efforts under the administration of Donald Trump, such as Operation Safeguard and Executive Order 14159, prioritized the removal of violent offenders, critics are now calling for the targeting of millions of undocumented migrants without criminal records.
This shift in focus follows a leadership change at the agency, with Senator Markwayne Mullin replacing Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security. To facilitate removals, the agency has deployed the CBP Home mobile app, which has already enabled millions of self-deportations.
Despite these operational efforts, the administration faces significant legal challenges. A recent court ruling blocked the termination of Temporary Protected Status for approximately 350,000 Haitian migrants. Concurrently, the White House has reportedly instructed House Republicans to stop discussing mass deportations in public.
