Gina Hinojosa Leads Greg Abbott in Texas Governor Poll

Texas legislator Gina Hinojosa narrowly leads incumbent Greg Abbott in a New York Times/Siena University poll while campaigning on a platform of economic populism.

Texas state legislator Gina Hinojosa has emerged as a competitive challenger to incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, who is seeking an unprecedented fourth term. A New York Times/Siena University poll shows Hinojosa narrowly leading Abbott, shifting her status from a long shot to a viable contender in the race.

Hinojosa is running on a platform of economic populism, prioritizing public education, affordability, and the impact of large data centers on rural communities. She specifically cites Project Matador in Amarillo as an example of corporate influence over rural resources. To attract disaffected MAGA voters, she is intentionally avoiding culture-war issues.

Hinojosa has criticized Abbott for his handling of maternal health and border security, as well as his relationship with Elon Musk. She argues that a Democratic victory represents an opportunity of a generation to restore political power to ordinary Texans and prevent the redrawing of rigged electoral maps. Her campaign has received $1 million in funding from the Democratic Governors Association, led by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
