Seychelles President Patrick Herminie Strengthens Ties With La Réunion and France

President Patrick Herminie of Seychelles agreed to modernize cooperation frameworks with La Réunion and celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations with France.

President Patrick Herminie of Seychelles visited La Réunion on July 14, 2026, to strengthen bilateral relations and celebrate French National Day. During talks with Huguette Bello, President of the Regional Council of La Réunion, the leaders agreed to modernize the 2003 Framework Cooperation Agreement. This update aims to expand political dialogue through a new Joint Commission and address critical needs in food security, health, and climate resilience.

Herminie advocated for the use of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index to boost climate financing and sought assistance in meeting Seychelles' renewable energy targets of 15% by 2030 and 30% by 2043. The leaders also discussed establishing a direct air link between the two regions and renewing youth exchange programs through a partnership between the Seychelles National Youth Council and the Chambre de Métiers et de l'Artisanat de La Réunion.

Following the diplomatic meetings, Herminie attended Bastille Day celebrations as the guest of honor. The visit included a military parade featuring the Seychelles Defence Forces and a reception hosted by Prefect Patrice Latron. Herminie noted that the celebrations coincided with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles' independence and 50 years of diplomatic ties with France, reaffirming his commitment to regional cooperation on maritime security, ocean preservation, and sustainable development.
