Donald Trump Claims Right to Run for Third Term

President Donald Trump claimed at an Iowa rally that he can run for a third term in 2028 because Democrats cheated in 2020.

Donald Trump claimed during a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, that he has the right to run for a third presidential term in 2028. While acknowledging that the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is concise and offers little wiggle room regarding term limits, Trump argued the restriction does not apply because Democrats cheated during the 2020 election.

Trump has previously teased a third-term bid during an appearance in Texas and through the sale of Trump 2028 merchandise. House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed these claims as a way of trolling the Democrats, while opponents expressed concern that the president may be serious about the bid.

Separately, Vice President J.D. Vance stated that running for president in 2028 is not a formality. Vance noted there is a chance he may not seek the office, citing family considerations.
