United States Rejects Iranian Nuclear Framework Proposal

The Government of the United States rejected a nuclear framework proposed by Iran during recent negotiations, stating the plan failed to meet the requirement that Iran never possess a nuclear weapon. According to senior administration officials, the Iranian proposal included a seven-page plan requesting uranium enrichment capacity roughly five times higher than the limits established by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

To discourage domestic enrichment, the U.S. offered Iran a permanent supply of free nuclear fuel. Iranian negotiators rejected this offer, insisting on the necessity of enriching uranium. U.S. officials further noted that Iran refused to discuss the issues of regional proxy groups or ballistic missiles.

President Donald Trump's administration characterized the negotiation process as being marked by "games tricks stall tactics." The International Atomic Energy Agency assessed that the projected Iranian framework would have significantly expanded enrichment capacity beyond the previous JCPOA standards.
