EU Ministers Meet in Ireland to Bolster Ukraine Support

EU defence ministers convened at the Druids Glen resort in County Wicklow, Ireland, on September 1, 2026, to address Ukraine's critical shortage of U.S.-made interceptor missiles. Chaired by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the meeting focused on securing missile stocks from member states and seeking contributions from Japan and South Korea. Kallas described July and August as the deadliest months for Ukrainian civilians and urged immediate action.

The discussions also addressed Russian hybrid warfare following the discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that Germany has increasingly become a target for such attackers. In response, the EU is drafting a 22nd round of sanctions that could add 1,600 Russian individuals and entities to its list and revisit the use of 200 billion euros in frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine.

Ireland's Minister for Defence Helen McEntee hosted the proceedings during Ireland's Presidency of the European Council. McEntee defended Ireland's security spending, noting a 43% increase in recent years. Due to Ireland's lack of independent long-range air defence, the British Royal Navy deployed a warship and submarine-hunting helicopter to secure the event's airspace.

The summit continues on September 2 with a meeting of foreign ministers. Participants include UK Foreign Secretary Edward Miliband and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who will discuss EU foreign policy structures and the European External Action Service.
