Donald Trump Proposes Renaming Atlantic Ocean to American Ocean

President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Atlantic Ocean to the American Ocean after Google CEO Sundar Pichai resisted similar requests for the mapping service.

President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Atlantic Ocean to the American Ocean during a rally in Mississippi on Monday. This suggestion follows earlier proposals this month to rename the body of water the Trump Ocean or the Ocean of the Americas. Trump previously issued executive orders that resulted in Google Maps renaming Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico to Lake America and the Gulf of America.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai refused to implement a name change for the Atlantic Ocean, arguing that oceans cover too many countries. Following this pushback, Trump told a crowd in South Carolina last week that he would likely keep the name Atlantic Ocean. Despite his general desire to rename a river, Trump promised the Mississippi rally crowd that he would not change the name of the Mississippi River.

Trump had previously floated the idea of renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific oceans during a rally in Tennessee. He expressed belief that Europe would be thrilled with the changes as he sought to establish a naming pattern including a lake, a gulf, a river, and an ocean.
