Trump Refuses to Clarify Kennedy Center Demolition Plans

President Donald Trump has refused to clarify whether he intends to demolish the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Serving as the center's chairman, Trump previously demanded his name be added to the building in exchange for renovation funding, describing the facility as a dump. However, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that only Congress possesses the authority to rename the center, prompting the board to cover the facade with a tarp.

The center's board recently voted to close the facility for two years to undergo a $257 million renovation funded by a congressional appropriation. The administration argues the project is essential because the building is dangerously dilapidated, citing 456 leaks between 2018 and 2023 and a recent ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer.

Critics, including U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, and activists at a Hands Off the Kennedy Center protest claim the closure is a pretext to destroy the memorial or hide declining attendance caused by Trump's takeover. Judge Cooper has ordered the administration to provide 30 days' notice before any demolition occurs and to explain if the closure violates existing court orders.
