Russia Deploys Jet-Powered Weapons in Escalated Ukraine Campaign

The Federal Government of Russia has deployed a new generation of inexpensive, jet-powered weapons, including Geran-5 drones and Banderol cruise missiles, to target Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. These systems, costing approximately $100,000 each, use advanced electronics to evade interception more effectively than previous propeller-driven models. Recent attacks across Ukraine killed at least 14 civilians and wounded more than 110 others, while a separate strike on a civilian vessel in the Black Sea killed two Azerbaijani crew members.

Russia's ability to mass-produce these weapons was enabled by sourcing dual-use components from China in violation of international sanctions. President Vladimir Putin reoriented the national budget and state-owned banks to prioritize defense volume, creating a disparity as Western allies struggle to scale production of high-cost interceptors like the Patriot system.

In response, the Government of Ukraine launched its deepest strikes inside Russian territory to date, targeting oil and gas infrastructure from Sochi to Siberia. Meanwhile, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has pledged over $40 billion over five years to enhance counterdrone capabilities. Western tech companies are currently redesigning interceptors to match the increased speed of the Russian aerial threats.
