Carney and Poilievre Visit Alberta Ahead of Separation Vote
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre are campaigning in Alberta to prevent the province from voting for separation on October 19.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre are traveling to Alberta this week to advocate for national unity before an October 19 vote. Albertans will decide whether to remain in Canada or initiate a legal process for a binding referendum on separation. Recent Leger polling shows 70 percent of residents support remaining part of Canada.
Carney emphasized that Canada is stronger together and highlighted government investments in the province, including a new West Coast pipeline. Poilievre is also urging Albertans to stay, though he is first visiting Detroit to propose a tariff-free auto pact intended to restore Canadian vehicle production.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith rejected suggestions from Elon Musk that the province should separate, asserting that the decision belongs solely to Albertans. Musk had previously suggested that Alberta and Saskatchewan would be better off separating from Canada.
