Democrats Win Georgia Senate and Governor Races

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff and former Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won high-stakes elections in Georgia, dealing a significant blow to President Donald Trump's midterm goals.

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff won reelection to his U.S. Senate seat on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican U.S. Representative Mike Collins. Ossoff secured the victory by campaigning against government corruption and the influence of President Donald Trump, raising nearly $125 million to outpace Collins's $5.8 million. While Collins attempted to link Ossoff to the policies of the Biden administration, Ossoff characterized his opponent as a bigot and a puppet of the president.

In a simultaneous victory for Democrats, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won the race for governor, defeating Republican billionaire Rick Jackson. Bottoms becomes the first Black female governor in U.S. history, succeeding the term-limited Brian Kemp. The gubernatorial race remained deadlocked in polling until the final results were tallied.

The elections were marked by record early voting, with over 3.3 million ballots cast. Despite reports of scanner malfunctions and text message scams in Fulton County, the results were decisive. Georgia voters also approved three constitutional amendments regarding conservation-use property tax limits, nonpartisan probate judge elections, and the modernization of 911 infrastructure.

Nationally, the results contributed to a Democratic surge in the 2026 midterms, including a flipped Senate seat in North Carolina. President Trump criticized the media coverage of the losses from the White House, while Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin announced that federal agents would investigate records for illegal noncitizen voting.
