Iranian Parliament Speaker Demands US Punishment Over Failed Talks
Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf says the United States must be punished to compel acceptance of Iranian demands following inadequate indirect negotiations.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf declared in a televised speech on Wednesday that the United States must be punished to force it to accept Iranian demands to end the war. The statement follows indirect negotiations between the two nations that Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, characterized as inadequate.
Tehran is demanding that the U.S. fulfill a June Memorandum of Understanding. These requirements include ending the blockade of Iran, providing sanctions relief, releasing frozen funds, and ensuring an end to Israel's war in Lebanon.
Ghalibaf urged Iran to pursue a dual strategy of courageous fighting and negotiation to establish lasting deterrence. He cited the Iran-Iraq War as a historical precedent, suggesting that Iran is prepared for the possibility of a prolonged conflict with the United States.
