Albanese Urges Economic Case for Emissions Cuts at UN

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged nations to prioritize the economic arguments for lowering emissions during a speech at the United Nations Climate Summit in New York. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Albanese characterized the shift to renewable energy as sound macroeconomic policy necessary to protect Pacific nations, which he described as facing an existential threat from climate change.

Albanese noted that Australia is pursuing emission reduction targets of 62 to 70 per cent by 2035. He linked the prioritization of Pacific climate risks to Australia's strategic bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029 and 2030 terms.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres supported this approach, stating that clean energy has become unstoppable and represents the most secure source of new electricity. Guterres advocated for matching the current energy revolution with a revolution in finance to address the accelerating crisis.
