Trump Diverts $4 Billion from Wind to Gas Projects
President Donald Trump is redirecting $4 billion from canceled offshore wind leases into liquefied natural gas and fossil fuel expansions to meet rising energy demands.
Donald Trump is diverting $4 billion in investments from renewable energy toward fossil fuel expansions by canceling offshore wind leases and providing refunds to developers. These funds are being redirected into liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas projects through government settlements.
Under these agreements, RWE AG relinquished wind leases in California and New York in exchange for a settlement to invest $900 million in a Woodside Energy Group Ltd. facility in Louisiana. TotalEnergies SE committed to U.S. gas projects after receiving nearly $1 billion in refunds, while BlackRock Inc.'s Global Infrastructure Partners is directing up to $765 million into LNG infrastructure following a payout for a New York wind development.
This policy shift occurs as domestic gas production reaches record levels to satisfy power demands for data centers. Additionally, conflict in Iran has disrupted Persian Gulf flows, increasing the global demand for U.S. LNG supplies.
