China and North Korea Open New Yalu River Bridge

China and North Korea officially opened the New Yalu River Bridge on October 15, ending a 12-year delay to boost bilateral trade and strategic ties.

The Government of China and the Government of North Korea officially opened the New Yalu River Bridge on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The 3-kilometer, four-lane structure connects Dandong, China, to Sinuiju, North Korea, and is intended to replace the aging, single-lane Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge as the primary route for road trade.

Although construction was completed in 2014, the bridge remained unused for 12 years. The delay occurred primarily because North Korea failed to complete necessary customs, immigration, and border control facilities. Fully funded by China with an investment of 2.22 billion yuan, the project was stalled by infrastructure gaps and pandemic-related border closures.

The opening follows a period of warming bilateral relations, including a September 2025 visit to Beijing by Kim Jong Un and a June 2026 visit to Pyongyang by Xi Jinping. During a June summit, the two leaders pledged to elevate ties to a strategic level. The new crossing is expected to increase port capacity, reduce logistics costs, and allow hundreds of vehicles to cross daily, helping North Korea narrow its trade deficit with China.

This development coincides with North Korea's broader effort to expand external exchanges, following the recent opening of its first road bridge with Russia. The Ministry of Unification of South Korea is closely monitoring the opening of the bridge.
