Trump Announces East Potomac Golf Course Overhaul Amid Legal Battle

President Donald Trump announced the East Potomac Golf Links will close November 15 for a 15-month transformation into a championship course despite ongoing judicial disputes.

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., will close on November 15 for a 15-month transformation into a world-class championship golf course. Designed by Tom Fazio, the new facility is intended to host major events such as the Ryder Cup and the U.S. Open. Trump stated the current course is "old, broke, dilapidated and of no further use or effect," claiming the project will create jobs and provide a positive economic impact for the region.

The project is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the DC Preservation League and local residents, represented by Democracy Forward. Opponents argue the redevelopment will cause environmental damage and destroy an affordable community asset. The dispute intensified after the Department of the Interior removed hundreds of trees over a holiday weekend, which Trump defended by noting the site had become "completely overgrown, dysfunctional, and unsafe."

Judicial friction has increased as U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes barred further tree removal until October 26, accusing the government of "double speak" for labeling the overhaul as routine maintenance. In response, the Department of Justice filed a motion to disqualify Judge Reyes, questioning her impartiality following a heated hearing.
