Türkiye Marks 10th Anniversary of Failed 2016 Military Coup

Türkiye held nationwide ceremonies on July 15, 2026, to commemorate the decade since a failed military coup attempt that fundamentally reshaped the country's political system.

Türkiye commemorated the 10th anniversary of the July 15, 2016, failed military coup on July 15, 2026, with nationwide events under the theme “Our Will, Our Victory.” Ceremonies spanned 81 provinces, including drone shows over the Bosphorus and tributes at the July 15 Martyrs’ Memorial in Ankara. The anniversary coincided with ongoing security operations, as the government launched raids across all provinces on July 13 to target nearly 1,000 suspects with alleged links to the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO).

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan successfully quashed the 2016 attempt by calling on civilians to resist military forces that used tanks and fighter jets to attack the Turkish Parliament and Presidential Complex. The original coup attempt resulted in approximately 250 to 287 deaths. In the aftermath, the government designated the movement led by US-based preacher Fethullah Gülen as a terrorist organization and implemented a state of emergency from 2016 to 2018.

This period facilitated a systemic political shift, transitioning Türkiye from a parliamentary to a presidential system and significantly expanding executive powers. The government dismissed over 125,000 civil servants and detained approximately 390,000 people. While officials like Burhanettin Duran credit Erdoğan's leadership for the victory, critics and Human Rights Watch argue that these emergency powers led to broader restrictions on civil liberties and the targeting of political rivals.
