Log Cabin Republicans Stop Advocating for Transgender Issues

The Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative gay rights organization, announced it will no longer advocate for transgender issues. President Ross Hemminger detailed the shift in an online essay, stating the group is distancing itself from radical transgender activists and their focus on minors. Hemminger argued that such advocacy has eroded support for same-sex marriage and harmed public perceptions of the gay rights movement.

This policy change aligns the organization with the administration of Donald Trump, which has barred transgender individuals from military service and prohibited federal Medicaid funds for adolescent gender-transition treatments.

Reactions to the move were divided. Former local chapter leaders suggested the shift is necessary to maintain progress within the Republican Party. Conversely, the Human Rights Campaign dismissed the organization's claims as a malicious propaganda campaign, and the Southern Poverty Law Center warned that abandoning transgender rights could embolden social conservatives to target gay and lesbian individuals.
