Trump Administration Deportations Target Thousands of Indians and Nigerians

President Donald Trump initiated an aggressive immigration enforcement campaign in January 2025, directing United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest all undocumented immigrants regardless of their criminal history. This policy rescinded previous priorities focusing on public safety threats and led to the deportation of approximately 540,000 immigrants and the detention of 70,000 individuals.

Data from the Deportation Data Project shows that ICE arrested 1,993 Indian nationals in 2025, more than double the previous year's count. While Trump claimed a focus on the "worst of the worst," records indicate 1,669 of those Indian nationals had no criminal convictions. The administration also revoked over 8,000 student visas and terminated thousands of immigration records, though some were later restored after a US District Judge called the process arbitrary.

The crackdown has caused significant disruption in Nigerian immigrant communities, characterized by door-to-door raids and a December 2025 partial visa ban. These actions have prompted many Nigerians to go into hiding or self-deport. The enforcement drive has been marked by violence, including two fatal shootings by ICE agents in Minneapolis in January 2026 that killed Renée Good and Alex Pretti.
