Trump Uses Taxpayer Funds for Ads Praising Presidency

President Donald Trump directed the use of US$20 million in taxpayer funds for television advertisements praising his presidency and promoting patriotism.

President Donald Trump instructed his budget director to use taxpayer funds for television advertisements praising his presidency. The initiative led to a US$20 million contract awarded on September 20 to LMD, a Maryland-based marketing firm. The funding was drawn from U.S. Customs and Border Protection under the Department of Homeland Security.

Approximately US$5.5 million has been spent to date on ads airing on major networks, including Fox News, CNN, ABC, and NBC. Critics from both the Democratic and Republican parties argue the spending violates federal laws that prohibit using public funds for propaganda.

The White House defends the advertisements as public service announcements designed to promote patriotism. Trump has denied that he is promoting himself, stating the ads are "for the country," while he simultaneously manages the MAGA Inc. super PAC, which holds US$400 million for midterm elections.
