Trump Conditions Saudi Nuclear Deal on Israel Normalization
President Donald Trump has conditioned a new U.S.-Saudi civil nuclear cooperation agreement on the kingdom joining the Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel.
The United States and Saudi Arabia announced a civil nuclear agreement on July 22, 2026, designed to help the kingdom meet energy demands and diversify its economy under the Vision 2030 initiative. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced the deal, which reportedly permits nuclear enrichment on Saudi soil and does not mandate the adoption of the IAEA Additional Protocol for short-notice inspections.
Following the signing, Donald Trump added a new condition to the agreement, demanding that Saudi Arabia join the Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel. This move creates a diplomatic pivot during an ongoing U.S.-Iran war focused on Tehran's nuclear capabilities.
Critics suggest the agreement's lack of stringent inspection requirements could trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. There are concerns that the ambiguity of the deal may encourage Iran to further harden its own nuclear enrichment positions in response to Saudi Arabia's new capabilities.
