Ukraine Strikes Russian Space Center as Russia Hits Ports

Volodymyr Zelensky authorized long-range strikes on a Russian space center while Russian forces targeted Ukrainian port infrastructure and energy facilities.

Ukrainian forces executed a series of long-range strikes on August 17, 2026, targeting the Progress Rocket Space Centre in Samara, Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the use of domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles to hit the facility, which is critical for the production of Soyuz launch vehicles and the Rassvet satellite broadband network. The operation also included attacks on the Savasleyka air base and an oil facility in Ust-Luga. Zelensky described these actions as long-range sanctions intended to reduce Russia's war potential.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation conducted drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian port infrastructure in Izmail and Odesa. Russia claimed to have destroyed a berthing terminal, naval drone warehouses, and a patrol boat. However, the governor of Odesa reported that a civilian Togo-flagged vessel was damaged and four people were injured during the attacks.

The conflict expanded into a broader campaign against energy and logistics. Russia launched 13 strikes against Naftogaz Group facilities in one week, while an attack on a DTEK mine resulted in the death of a 52-year-old man. In response, Ukraine fired over 800 long-range drones into Russia, targeting Wildberries depots up to 2,000 kilometers from the border. These threats forced Russian officials to postpone the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival in Moscow.
