Asian Markets Decline Amid AI Spending and Political Concerns
Asian share markets fell Monday as investors questioned the sustainability of AI capital expenditures and faced pressure from cryptocurrency thefts and geopolitical tensions.
Asian share markets declined on Monday, with Japan's Nikkei falling 0.5% and South Korea's market losing 0.8%. The downturn reflects growing investor anxiety over the sustainability of artificial intelligence investment and the scale of capital expenditures, specifically fears regarding negative cash flow and peaking growth rates for AI spending.
Ben Snider, chief US equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, noted that while earnings growth remains strong, it is no longer accelerating. This volatility follows a nearly 29% drop in Intel shares on Friday and precedes upcoming earnings reports from Apple, AMD, and Palantir. Market pressure is further compounded by potential political hurdles for data centers following U.S. midterm elections and billion-dollar thefts from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange.
Beyond technology, oil prices dipped as Iranian and Qatari officials continued talks to end the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Investors remain focused on upcoming U.S. payrolls data and potential interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve and other global central banks, including the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Bank of England, and the Riksbank.
