"Restoration" is the word this administration reaches for when it wants to make something new sound like something old. The War Department is restored. The reclassification of 8,000 federal workers is a restoration of the democratic process. An executive order that scrubbed gender from federal data is titled "Restoring Biological Truth." Same verb, unrelated domains. Pull that thread and a pattern unspools. The Department of Defense became the Department of War at an all-hands meeting, where Pete Hegseth announced the only mission of the newly restored department.

The name changed and the rules changed in the same breath. The same day brought a record $1 trillion defense budget, the removal of military leaders who disagreed with the administration, and a ban on transgender service ^[1]. The missile shield ordered in the first week is now a $1.2 trillion system with 7,800 satellites, and the CBO's own paperwork refers to the implementing agency as the "United States Department of War" ^[5]. "Deep state" and "enemies list" were labels before they were firings. Kash Patel purged senior agents named on that list ^[6]. Then 8,000 federal workers were reclassified as at-will, expandable to 50,000, and the OPM director reached for the same word.

The board relabeled the grounds "President Donald J. Trump Plaza," and then the Justice Department threatened to demolish the building entirely and replace it with an outdoor amphitheater ^[10]. Stop the name, and the structure escalates. To be clear about what the record shows: the pairing is established, the intent is not. No source says the administration deliberately uses naming as a signal. Some critics read the whole thing as vanity, a "racket" of free advertising for political dynasties ^[11]. But the Kennedy Center is where the pattern's meaning becomes visible. When the name was protected, the building itself was put on the table.
