The Biggest Fraud Allegation Has No Investigator
Two weeks from the midterms, the Justice Department is hunting fraud in every direction except the one pointing at the president's own venture — and both parties now price any examination of that money as an election result, not a case.
In April, the largest backer of the president's own crypto venture sued it for fraud. Justin Sun alleged the company built a hidden backdoor into its token that froze 4 billion of his — once worth more than a billion dollars — in retaliation for refusing to sink $200 million into the family's stablecoin [1]. The company's entire public answer was five words.

Five months on, no public investigator has picked the suit up. No subpoena, no filing, no hearing. The season's biggest fraud allegation — and the only one pointing directly at the president's family's money — has drawn no public examination at all. In the election's final weeks, the department has been busy everywhere else. Agents raided Ilhan Omar's home and took her passport [2]. It published a video attacking Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, sued California after election officials balked at a 48-hour demand to run 20,000 voters' citizenship through a government-supplied USB drive, rewrote its own ethics rules so Senate-confirmed officials could campaign, and its attorney general has been stumping at Republican rallies [3]. The department's defense of all of it is that no formal rule bars any of it — the 60-day pre-election tradition, not any statute, was the referee, and the tradition is what has been set aside [3]. What changed is not just what the department is doing but what it can no longer do. The anti-corruption unit of the FBI's Washington field office was purged and the public-corruption section told it could not open new cases — which is how a bribery probe that had already named members of both parties, born from the "Fat Leonard" Navy scandal, went still [4]. Roughly 23,000 criminal cases — terrorism, drugs, white-collar — were closed to make room for 32,000 immigration prosecutions [5]. The Office of Professional Responsibility, the department's own referee, has dropped from 29 staff to 16 and is opening new investigations at a 20-year low, while the inspector general's office is down 99 people [6]. A court called the department's settlement of the president's own tax case "collusive" [6]. And the agency that would police election interference, CISA, has placed more than a dozen election-security staffers on leave [7]. None of this means the fraud the department does see is invented. The 57 convictions in Minnesota's $250 million daycare network were real [8]. The noncitizen voter indictments are real [9]. That is precisely what makes the cover plausible: point at genuine fraud and the rest follows. But the same instrument misfires on citizens — Nevada's own review found all 185 names the federal government flagged there were lawful voters [9]. Meanwhile the allegations pointing at the family's own venture keep accumulating with nowhere to land. Of 5.9 billion tokens sold to private investors, the sales went undisclosed and 75 percent of the proceeds flowed to a Trump-family entity, DT Marks DEFI LLC [1]. A $2 billion investment in the pardoned Binance founder's exchange — money from an Emirati state fund — runs through the venture's stablecoin, earning the family tens of millions a year. Maxine Waters called it what it is [10].
I don't believe I've ever met him, but I've been told by ---a lot of support, he had a lot of support, and they said that what he did is not even a crime, it wasn't a crime that he was persecuted by the Biden administration and so I gave him a pardon at the request of a lot of very good people. — Donald Trump
The rails beneath all of it moved at least $2.3 billion since 2023 for Iran's central bank and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, on blockchains founded by the venture's two biggest backers [11]. The administration's answer to that reporting was a dismissal.

The quiet around the Sun suit needs no speculation about motive. The one party with standing to press it is a loyalist who insists the lawsuit hasn't touched his politics [1].

The injured party won't press the claim, and the offices that might have examined it on their own have been thinned out. The price of that vacuum is now visible in who is hiring lawyers. Administration officials, from cabinet secretaries down to midlevel staffers, are retaining private counsel for investigations they expect only if Democrats take the House — letters have already gone to Kushner, Hegseth and Trump Jr. as subpoena precursors, over the wedding financing, the Kennedy Center renovation and pay-to-play pardons [12]. The White House is already calling whatever comes a "decadelong witch hunt" [12]. And Democrats have staked their only stated path to examining the family's crypto and prediction-market ties on winning Congress itself [13]. Two weeks out, both parties have priced the examination of the family's money as an election result rather than a docket item — and they agree on that much already.
