The War Department Already Existed

On July 13, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum delegating authority to prosecute media leaks to the "War Department's Office of General Counsel."

The House would not vote to rename the Department of Defense for another nine days. On July 22, it passed the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act in a 216–212 vote, authorizing $1.15 trillion in defense spending and officially designating the building the "Department of War." ^[1] The memo is the structural proof: the label caught up to internal usage, not the reverse. The institutional data system already listed entity_id 395 as "United States Department of War." ^[2] The machine the label describes had been assembling for months. In March, the Pentagon designated Palantir's Maven Smart System an official program of record, standardizing AI-driven targeting across all military branches by September. In late May, the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk and terminated its contracts — not for performance failure, but because the company refused to allow its AI models in autonomous weapons. Hegseth was explicit about the standard.

The Pentagon barred the firm from further work and prohibited other contractors from engaging with it. Anthropic sued, alleging illegal retaliation. Yet the Pentagon continues to deploy Anthropic's unreleased Mythos AI model for cybersecurity under a separate program — purging the vendor ideologically while keeping the technology it needs. ^[4][5] In June, the Pentagon redesignated its press office as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, banning journalists from the workspace. The press secretary now refers to the "Office of the Secretary of War." Hegseth has dismissed media reporting on the Iran campaign as an "endless stream of garbage." ^[6] The Pentagon also began weighing whether to divert PAC-3 Patriot missiles from Ukraine to replenish U.S. stocks depleted by the Iran campaign. The campaign had consumed over 1,000 interceptors in eleven days — more than the total given to Ukraine since 2022. ^[7] A leaked Pentagon memo proposed suspending Spain from NATO after Madrid refused basing and overflight rights for the Iran war and rejected the demand that allies spend 5% of GDP on defense. The U.S. began considering relocating bases from Spain to Morocco. ^[8] There is counter-evidence — officials who insist the legal and institutional guardrails still hold. Veterans in Congress from both parties introduced bills to constrain the Iran campaign. Rep. Tom Barrett, a 22-year Army veteran, set a July 30 deadline with troop and mission restrictions. Rep. Pat Ryan, a former Army intelligence officer, introduced the No Funds for Iran War Act with sixteen veteran co-sponsors. ^[9] Senate Republicans blocked three Democratic resolutions to terminate operations. The direction of travel runs against the guardrails. The officer who asserts the legal floor is the same officer cautioning that AI must deliver violence only where intended — while the Pentagon fires the vendor who refused to let it. The veterans' bills stalled. The press was classified out of the building. Beneath the entire architecture sits the 2026 National Defense Strategy, released in January. It declares:

Our purpose will not be aggression or perpetual war. Rather, our goal is peace. — Federal government of the United States

The NDS prioritizes the U.S. homeland, invokes the "Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine" to assert access to Greenland, the Panama Canal, and the Gulf of America, and shifts China from confrontation to "managed competition." It omits Taiwan and climate change. ^[10] The peace language is the one piece of the apparatus that lies. The rename is the one piece that tells the truth about what the apparatus does.
