Poland Heightens Air Defenses as Russia Targets Ukraine Digital Infrastructure

Poland has heightened its air defense posture and launched preventive air patrols following repeated Russian incursions into its airspace, including a Mi-8 helicopter flight from Kaliningrad on September 23. Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that intelligence indicates a Russian plan for hybrid drone and missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, while Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz expanded airspace protection measures.

Simultaneously, Russia launched coordinated attacks against Ukraine's digital infrastructure, targeting datacenters and internet service providers in Kyiv. These strikes caused internet outages for 100,000 households and included a drone strike on the offices of Datagroup that killed four people. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated these attacks sought to disrupt the flow of information. In a related act of sabotage, a Starlink satellite station in central Poland serving Ukraine was set on fire on Thursday.

Amid these escalations, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported to the United Nations General Assembly that Russia has deployed over 2,100 missiles and 63,000 drones against Ukraine since the start of 2026. To counter these threats, Zelenskyy announced that Donald Trump approved licenses for Ukraine to domestically produce Patriot air defense missiles. These developments coincided with the Russian United Russia Party securing a larger majority in the Duma elections, which Ukraine marked by launching its largest combined air strike of the war against Moscow and Russian oil refineries.
