Andy Burnham Calls Brexit a Failure and Plans EU Visit

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated Brexit has weakened the UK economy and scheduled a November meeting with EU leaders to seek a better deal.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reignited the national debate over the United Kingdom's relationship with the European Union, characterizing Brexit as a failure that weakened the economy and diminished immigration control. While he expressed a desire for the UK to rejoin the EU within his lifetime, he explicitly ruled out rejoining during the current Parliament to maintain the Labour Party's manifesto red lines regarding the single market and freedom of movement.

During Prime Minister's Questions, Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham of creating confusion over whether the government would hold a referendum on rejoining. Burnham dismissed these claims and called for an evidence-based debate on the consequences of leaving the bloc.

To address these issues, Burnham is scheduled to travel to Brussels on November 20 to meet with EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The Prime Minister intends to seek a more favorable deal and discuss the long-term future of the relationship. However, EU Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier has already warned that freedom of movement would be a non-negotiable condition for any British return to the single market.
