Trump Weighs Ground Invasion of Iran as Energy Crisis Deepens

President Donald Trump is weighing the deployment of thousands of U.S. ground troops to Iran as a conflict launched by the U.S. and Israel on February 28 enters its fourth week. Potential operations under "Operation Epic Fury" include seizing Kharg Island—a hub for 90% of Iranian oil exports—and deploying special forces to secure enriched uranium at the Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow facilities. To support these options, the Pentagon has requested $200 billion in supplemental funding from Congress.

To bolster regional capacity, the U.S. Navy accelerated the deployment of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from California, sending approximately 2,500 Marines to join other forces already in the Middle East. While Trump has publicly denied sending ground troops, he noted he would not disclose such a move if he were. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt characterized the preparations as providing "maximum optionality."

The conflict has escalated into a severe energy crisis. Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz and launched drone and missile strikes against oil refineries in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Global oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel. In retaliation, the U.S.-Israeli coalition has conducted over 7,800 airstrikes, targeting Iranian leadership and nuclear infrastructure. Iran has warned that a ground attack on its soil is a "red line" that would trigger a "great surprise."
