Erdogan and Netanyahu Exchange Genocide Accusations Over Regional Security

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traded insults and genocide accusations after Erdogan claimed Israeli military actions in Syria and Lebanon threaten Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu engaged in a sharp diplomatic clash on June 10 and 11, 2026, trading accusations of genocide and dictatorship. Addressing AK Party lawmakers in Ankara, Erdoğan declared that Israeli military strikes in Syria and Lebanon now threaten Turkish security, asserting that Turkey's interests extend to Aleppo, Damascus, and Beirut. He characterized Israel as a factory of chaos and compared Netanyahu's leadership to that of Adolf Hitler, while warning that Turkey would respond firmly to any violations of its rights or those of Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Benjamin Netanyahu rejected these claims, labeling Erdoğan an antisemitic dictator and accusing him of committing genocide against the Kurds, supporting Hamas, and imprisoning political rivals. Netanyahu defended the Israel Defense Forces as the most moral army in the world and pledged continued forceful action against Iran and its proxies to ensure regional security.

Turkish officials further escalated the rhetoric, with spokesperson Ömer Çelik calling Netanyahu's claims the biggest lie in the world and Justice Minister Akın Gürlek noting that Netanyahu is a suspect in a genocide investigation in Istanbul. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu claimed Turkey would one day see the liberation of Jerusalem. The rift coincides with planned energy meetings in Houston, Texas, between ministers from Cyprus, Israel, Greece, and the United States, which Erdoğan criticized as an attempt to destabilize the region.
