Netanyahu Prepares Legal Case Against President Erdogan
Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the preparation of a legal dossier against Recep Tayyip Erdogan following Turkey's request for an Interpol arrest warrant for the Israeli leader.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered an interministerial team and the International Law Department of the Justice Ministry to prepare a legal case against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The dossier focuses on Erdogan's alleged connections to Hamas financing and actions against Kurdish minorities.
This legal escalation follows a Turkish court's issuance of an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on genocide charges related to the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which led Turkey to request an Interpol Red Notice. While Israel is considering submitting the case to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, officials indicate the primary goal is to use the dossier as leverage and a deterrent against the Turkish president.
The diplomatic rift intensified during a United Nations General Assembly speech where Netanyahu called Erdogan a "tyrant" and a "super-spreader of antisemitic lies." In response, the Turkish government characterized the remarks as "desperate and empty attempts" to mask Israeli military actions in Gaza. Burhanettin Duran, Turkey's Communications Director, dismissed the allegations as "baseless accusations."
Both Israel and Turkey are not parties to the Rome Statute. Additionally, Netanyahu is currently subject to an ICC arrest warrant issued in November 2024 for alleged war crimes in Gaza, a move the United States has opposed.
