Mark Carney Launches Build Baby Build Strategy to Counter Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney launched the Build, baby, build economic strategy to counter the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies. The initiative follows a rise in Canadian unemployment to 7.1 percent in August, triggered by U.S. tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum.

Central to the plan is the creation of a Major Projects Office by the Treasury Board of Canada to fast-track the construction of mines, highways, ports, and potentially a new oil pipeline. The government intends to unleash half a trillion dollars in infrastructure investment to reduce economic reliance on the United States by expanding trade with Asia and Europe.

During a visit to Germany, Carney and Energy Minister Tim Hodgson focused on exporting liquefied natural gas to European buyers to diversify energy markets. However, the strategy faces pushback from Greenpeace and Indigenous leaders. National Chief Cindy Woodhouse criticized the energy infrastructure push, urging the government to avoid adopting policies similar to those of the U.S. administration.
