U.S. Strikes Iran as India Urges Diplomatic Restraint

The United States launched military strikes against Iran on July 30, 2026, in retaliation for an attempted Iranian attack on U.S. forces in the Middle East. These operations followed Iranian ballistic missile launches targeting U.S. military positions in Jordan. Iranian state media reported resulting explosions near oil infrastructure in the southern provinces of Hormozgan and Khuzestan.

Donald Trump vowed a forceful response, stating the United States would hit Iran "very hard." In tandem with the strikes, U.S. Central Command conducted regional maritime operations, redirecting 24 commercial vessels, disabling two, and boarding two to ensure compliance.

Following the escalation, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on July 31. Jaishankar expressed deep concerns regarding regional hostilities and urged that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers be avoided under any circumstance. The Indian government also informed Parliament that 16 Indian nationals, including 10 seafarers, have been killed in West Asia since the conflict began this year.
