Trump Seeks $230 Million DOJ Payout for Past Probes

President Donald Trump is seeking $230 million from the Department of Justice as compensation for previous federal investigations into his conduct.

President Donald Trump is seeking approximately $230 million in taxpayer-funded compensation from the United States Department of Justice to settle administrative claims filed in 2023 and 2024. The demands stem from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and the 2022 FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate, which Trump characterizes as malicious prosecution and a violation of privacy. Trump acknowledged the unusual nature of the request, noting he is effectively suing himself and that the final decision would have to go across his desk. He stated he would donate any received funds to charity or use them for White House renovations, including a new ballroom.

The request has triggered intense ethical scrutiny because the officials authorized to approve settlements over $4 million include Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr., both of whom previously served as Trump's or his associates' defense attorneys. Attorney General Pam Bondi further drew criticism for firing the department's top ethics official in July.

House Democrats, led by Representative Jamie Raskin and Representative Robert Garcia, launched an investigation into the matter, calling the demand a shakedown and a violation of the domestic Emoluments Clause. Republican reactions have been mixed; while some allies defend his right to seek damages, others, including Senator Thom Tillis and Senator Susan Collins, cited horrible optics and a lack of precedent, particularly as the request coincided with a government shutdown.
