Democrats Seize Control of Congress in Midterm Rebuke of Trump

Democrats won majorities in the U.S. House and Senate, flipping key Republican strongholds and electing several historic governors in a decisive rebuke of President Donald Trump.

The Democratic Party won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, ending a Republican governing trifecta. The sweep included flipping traditionally red Senate seats in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, and Iowa. In Texas, James Talarico became the first Democrat elected to the Senate from the state since 1988, while Gina Hinojosa ousted incumbent Greg Abbott to become the first Latina governor in Texas history.

Exit polls indicate the results were a direct repudiation of President Donald Trump, driven by voter frustration over high inflation, fuel prices, and a costly war with Iran. The elections also produced historic milestones: Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history in Georgia, and Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim American elected to the Senate in Michigan. Conversely, Republican Byron Donalds became the first Black Republican governor in U.S. history after winning in Florida.

President Donald Trump initially reacted with defiance, claiming the GOP would have won in a landslide had he been on the ballot. He later stated he was willing to accept the results but vowed to act as "Mr. Veto" to block Democratic legislation. Democratic leaders, including incoming House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries, signaled plans to launch aggressive oversight investigations into the Trump family's businesses and the administration's conduct of the Iran war. The shift in power is expected to constrain the president's legislative agenda and judicial appointments for the final two years of his term.
