US and Indonesia Reach Reciprocal Trade Agreement

The United States and Indonesia established a trade framework reducing US tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19% in exchange for broad market access and billions in purchases.

The United States and Indonesia reached a reciprocal trade agreement on July 22, 2025, to reduce trade barriers and expand digital commerce. Under the framework, Donald Trump reduced a threatened tariff on Indonesian products from 32% to 19%, though goods transshipped to avoid duties or containing substantial Chinese inputs will face a 40% tariff. In exchange, Indonesia will eliminate tariff barriers on approximately 99% of American industrial, tech, and agricultural goods.

Indonesia committed to purchasing tens of billions of dollars in U.S. products, including 50 Boeing aircraft, $15 billion in energy products, and $4.5 billion in agricultural commodities. Additionally, the Indonesian sovereign wealth fund Danantara plans to sign an $8 billion contract with KBR Inc. to build 17 modular refineries. To further incentivize investment, Jakarta will relax local content requirements for companies like Apple and General Electric and remove export restrictions on critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, and copper.

The deal includes significant digital trade concessions, with Indonesia dropping plans to tax internet data flows and agreeing to allow the transfer of personal data to the U.S. While the White House hailed the deal as a breakthrough, some Indonesian critics and the Global Trade Research Initiative characterized the agreement as one-sided. Indonesian officials maintain that data transfers will remain under tight national supervision. The agreement is scheduled to take effect on August 1, serving as a benchmark for ongoing U.S. trade negotiations with other Asian nations, including India.
