Donald Trump Endorses Benjamin Netanyahu in Tight Israeli Election

Israeli voters head to the polls October 27 in a deadlocked race between Benjamin Netanyahu and Gadi Eisenkot amid security failures and foreign endorsements.

Israelis will vote on October 27 to determine the country's leadership in the first election since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. The race is a tight contest between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot, with polling showing a sharp divide over accountability for security failures. While a Walla poll projects the Zionist opposition holding 54 seats against Netanyahu's 48, other surveys suggest a near-stalemate, with some right-wing polls indicating Netanyahu may hold a slight lead.

Netanyahu's Likud Party is advocating for the creation of buffer zones in Lebanon, Gaza, the Golan, and Judea and Samaria. In contrast, Eisenkot's Yashar Party is campaigning on the promise to establish a state commission of inquiry to investigate the October 7 attacks. Other central issues include military service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox citizens.

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a "Complete and Total Endorsement" of Netanyahu. Neither the Netanyahu bloc nor the opposition currently has a clear path to the 61-seat majority required in the 120-seat Knesset. This deadlock may leave Arab parties as kingmakers, though Eisenkot risks a backlash from far-right partners if he seeks their support. Public confidence in election integrity has hit an eight-year low, with Gallup reporting only 56% of citizens express confidence in the vote.
